GDA's help consumers make sense of the nutrition information provided on the food label and are intended as guidance to help consumers in their understanding of their recommended daily requirements of energy (calories), fat and other nutrients.

Health and Nutrition Claims

Health claims include statements about the beneficial effect on the body of a food, while nutrition claims are statements with regard what is in the food. An example of a health claim is 'helps maintain a healthy heart 'and an example of a nutrition claim is 'Low in fat'.

Vitamin and Mineral Claims:

  • Rich/Excellent Source - the food must supply 50% of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) - of that mineral or vitamin.
  • Source of - the food must supply 17% of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) - of that mineral or vitamin.
Nutrition Claim What it Means
Low fat less than 3g fat per 100g / 100ml
Reduced fat 30% less fat than a similar standard product, it does not mean the product is low in fat.
No added sugar No sugar (or food composed mainly of sugar) has been added to the product. Maystill contain natural sugar i.e. fruit sugar in fruit juice.
Low sugar No more than 5g sugar/100g
Reduced sugar Must contain 25% less sugar than the regular product
Low calorie Less than 40kcals per 100g.
Low sodium 0.12g sodium per 100g
Low salt 0.3g salt/100g
High fibre 6g fibre per 100g
Rich source of a vitamin / mineral food must supply 50% of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA)
Source of vitamin /mineral Food must supply 17% of the RDA
